Liskerrett Future plans
A New Community Vision for Liskeard Cattle Market :
‘Regenerate the Cattle Market to create a new community heart which catalyses the “up-cycling” of the town; provide a mix of uses including community, arts and culture, enterprise, eating and selling; create flexible, public space for markets and other activities; provide green spaces and accessible community gardens; connect to and serve the whole town, providing something for everyone.’
These are some of the ideas to emerge from the Liskeard Cattle Market Charrette* held between Friday 8 to Tuesday 12 March 2019 under the guidance of JTP Architects to create a new Vision for this important site.
How Does This Impact on Liskerrett Community Centre:
The existing Liskerrett Centre opened in 2002 on the site of the former Liskeard Junior School. Whilst it is a much-loved and popular facility, the buildings on the site are showing their age. Maintenance is expensive, our facilities aren’t up to modern standards and our buildings aren’t fully accessible.
The proposed development of the Liskeard Cattle Market site has given us the opportunity to consider a new community facility; a welcoming, well equipped, multiuse community and art space for Liskeard and the surrounding area. A space fit for purpose for generations to come.
There are many considerations to take into account before any final decision is made on how the vision for the Cattle Market can be turned into a reality, and what part Liskerrett will play in this. The Trustees of Liskerrett are actively engaged in these discussions.
Our commitment to Liskeard remains unchanged. We are run by the community, for the community. We want to continue to provide affordable spaces, to provide support for our users and volunteers, and to make a welcoming, inclusive place for everyone.
We’d encourage anyone who is interested in the future of Liskeard to look at the exciting vision for the Cattle Market produced by the community during the charrette process and keep up to date with what has happened since.
‘There is a genuine aspiration to work together for the benefit of the whole town, the built and green environment, the local economy and community wellbeing.’
*The charrette – Liskeard was selected by the Government (one of only two places in the country) to take part in this ground-breaking, intensive programme which brought local residents together with designers and decision makers to co-design the future of the Cattle Market
